چکیده

A software tool-set, from which dynamic simulation of any type of positive displacement compressor can be constructed, is developed using an object oriented approach. This approach has three major advantages. The frrst is that a simulation code for any type of positive displacement compressor can be developed quickly with a uniform protocol. The second advantage is the ease of handling of creation, annihilation, merger and separation of compression chambers, and the changes in topology associated with them. These events are common to most types of compressors, except for the simplest reciprocal piston type. The third advantage is the ease of replacing the models of components, such as the valves or even the compression chambers themselves, as different designs or better models become available. The simulation codes are used in optimizing the design parameter of compressors being developed, as well as competitive analysis of different types of compressors that would be deployed under the same service requirements.

CFD for Positive Displacement Compressors

CFD has become a buzz word in all sectors and many industries, while the positive displacement compressor industries are rather slow in embracing it. The paper examines whether it is because positive displacement compressors were considered as basically thermodynamic devices or due to the inherent challenges for application. The paper discusses the need for CFD and it’s current status in genera...

Breakthrough of Large Positive Displacement Rotary Compressors in the Second Half of the 20th Century

Only two classes of compressors were offered at the end of the 1950s in the United States for large air conditioning and refrigeration applications: the positive displacement reciprocating and the dynamic centrifugal machines. Reviewing manufacturers’ catalogs of water chillers showed that the capacity range of the two classes overlapped. The authors of a 1961 paper came to the following conclu...

Numerical Analysis of Suction Mufflers

The aim of this paper is to present the numerical resolution of suction muffler configurations (by means of a tridimensional, unstructured, parallel and object oriented CFD&HT TermoFluids code (Lehmkuhl, et al. 2007) specially adapted to low Mach models (Lopez et al. 2012), coupled with the numerical resolution of the whole compressor domain (by means of a modular, unstructured and object orien...

Incorporating 3D Suction or Discharge Plenum Geometry into a 1D Compressor Simulation Program to Calculate Compressor Pulsations

A 3D calculated impedance transfer matrix method has been developed and demonstrated to provide accurate and efficient prediction of pressure pulsations in positive displacement compressors. The method is easily incorporated into 1D compressor simulation models, where a single impedance matrix, normalized to density and speed of sound, can be used to model all compressor running speeds and oper...
